Common Windows Error Messages
Error messages, as annoying as they may be, are commonly encountered by all computer users. Most of the more common Windows error messages are fixable, though some are more daunting than others. Here we’ll introduce you to some of the errors you’ll likely encounter most frequently.
1. Svchost.exe
This error message usually pops up when the computer starts. It is normally associated with printers and scanners. Unfortunately, to solve this error you may have to disconnect or uninstall your printer or scanner. If that doesn’t work, remember that Svchost, like all computer programs, launches from the registry. A good registry cleaner may be your last, best option. Research the registry cleaner that is right for your machine and make sure the advice you get is reputable before you attempt this solution.
2. kernel32.dll
This error message is generated when the operating system becomes corrupted by downloads. Registry cleaners can fix these problems too, but again, be careful which one you choose.
3. Iexplore.exe Application Error
This message is associated with BHOs (Browser Helper Objects). A BHO is a program that starts up automatically whenever you go to your Internet browser. Without getting too technical, it essentially helps make your Internet surfing smoother and faster. But BHOs are also associated with spyware and malware, which can conflict with all your programs. The more common BHOs include Morpheus, BuyersPort, WURLD Shopping Community, and Morpheus Shopping Club.
What happens to cause the error message is that the BHO may try to alter systems files for which it needs administrative authorization. When the BHO cannot gain access to these systems files, Internet Explorer abruptly ceases to function. To cure your system of this problem, remove the BHO. Unfortunately, this removal may be easier said than done. A useful product for facilitating this process is BHOList.exe which can be downloaded off the Internet.
4. Shell32.dll
Shell32.dll is a Windows file that, among other complicated things, helps to maintain your system’s stability. This error may occur when you are downloading a Shell32.dll file. To fix it, double check with the software’s manufacturer to see if the program you are running is Windows-compatible, and if so, ask them whether they can provide you with a new and updated version.
Enter: “Error Messages For Windows”
These are just a few common Windows error messages. There are dozens more. Don’t worry if you feel a sense of panic in trying to understand and fix all of them. Luckily, Windows provides a wonderful utility called “Error Messages For Windows.” This product allows you to search for Windows’ error code numbers and then specifically explains what each of those numbers means. This utility will work for Windows XP, Millennium Ed., and 98, as well as on Windows 2000 and 95/NT systems.
Hopefully, this all makes the world of Windows error messages seem a lot more manageable. Just remember, no matter how obscure or confusing the message, there is always a way to rectify it.
